When wipers leave marks on your windshield

Wipers should clear the view, but dirty, damaged or incorrectly fitted blades need attention. Inspect the rubber and look for tears, missing sections or uneven contact. Follow the vehicle’s instructions for accessing the blades; a lifted wiper arm can damage the glass if it drops.

Clean the windshield and blades using compatible products. If wiping remains ineffective, check the blade condition and fit before choosing a replacement. Our guide to windshield wipers is a starting point, while your owner’s manual supplies the correct specification.

A smear, a scratch and a chip are different problems. Do not assume a scratch will turn into a crack or apply a chip-repair kit to it. Ask about auto-glass assessment and repair options for marks that remain after cleaning. If inspection identifies damage requiring new glass, review our windshield replacement service.
