Budget for an assessed windshield repair
Start with repair eligibility, not the lowest advertised price. A qualified technician should assess the damage and the vehicle before you compare repair costs. The location, condition and affected glass layers matter; size alone does not settle the decision.
Get a repair-specific written estimate
Ask what damage the quote covers, how the work is priced and whether there is an assessment charge. Request the expected total and a clear description of the proposed repair. Compare estimates for the same assessed work rather than treating repair and replacement as interchangeable options.
Agree what happens if the plan changes
Ask in advance what charges would apply if inspection rules out repair or the proposed work changes. Ask the shop to obtain your approval of a revised estimate before starting a different procedure. AAR does not charge you or your insurer for the attempted repair if a chip spreads during that attempt. If a completed paid repair later spreads from the original repair location, AAR credits the amount paid for that repair toward windshield replacement with AAR.
Check your own policy
If you may use insurance, ask whether this damage is covered, what deductible applies and what you would pay for an eligible repair compared with a replacement. Confirm any policy requirements before authorizing work. Only your actual policy and insurer can answer those questions; a general article cannot promise a zero-cost repair.
Set expectations in writing
Ask what appearance improvement is realistic, what any repair warranty covers and how to report a concern. A repair can leave a visible remnant, so do not assume a chip will disappear. Keep the estimate, approval and completed repair record.
A budget does not change repair limits. If replacement is recommended, ask about the safe next steps and a written replacement estimate rather than choosing an unsuitable repair or delaying necessary work just for a lower price.
