Prepare the visibility equipment

Winter windshield care begins before ice or condensation obscures the road. Test the defroster and washers, check the blades for wear and use washer fluid appropriate for the expected temperature and your vehicle. NHTSA winter driving guidance recommends checking this equipment and replacing worn blades before winter travel.

Use the instructions for your vehicle

Read the owner’s manual for demisting, defrosting and clearing ice. Choose tools and products compatible with the glass and any film or coating. Do not improvise a treatment from a general internet recipe. Plan enough time to clear your view before leaving, and postpone non-essential travel when conditions make the journey unsafe.

Keep damage assessment separate

Winter preparation does not establish whether a chip or crack is repairable. Record new damage and ask a technician about it; do not assume that seasonal care will prevent a crack from changing. If you suspect an installation problem, our guide to possible auto-glass installation concerns helps organize questions for the installer. Avoid assigning every windshield the same structural-support percentage.
