Windshield stain care: choose a surface-compatible cleaner, use a soft cloth, follow product-specific instructions and seek advice for persistent marks. Full guidance follows.

Check the glass and film instructions

Before treating a stubborn windshield mark, check the care instructions for your vehicle and any tint, coating or protection film. Choose a cleaning product approved for that exact surface and follow its application and cleanup directions.

Use a clean soft cloth

Use the non-abrasive cleaning method allowed by those instructions. Keep grit out of your cloth and cleaning water, and protect nearby trim and interior surfaces from cleaner. Our windshield maintenance checklist puts glass care alongside checks for wipers and new damage.

Treat household cleaners as surface specific

Vinegar and rubbing alcohol are not universal windshield-cleaning recipes. The 2019 Ford GT manual permits diluted vinegar but prohibits alcohol on its specified coated interior glass. XPEL permits a specified alcohol mixture for sap and tar on its own TPU windshield film. These examples do not establish the right product, dilution or contact time for your windshield; follow its own instructions.

Find out why the mark remains

If approved cleaning does not remove the mark, ask a qualified cleaning professional familiar with your vehicle’s glass and films to identify it. Steam cleaning or polishing cannot be promised to remove every stain without damage; some glass polishes deliberately remove coatings. If the mark appears to be a scratch, chip or crack, read our windshield damage assessment guidance and arrange an appropriate assessment.

Separate care advice from services

Auto Glass in San Antonio does not offer cleaning or detailing services. This article provides general care information. For marks that appear when the blades move, our guide to wipers that leave marks explains useful blade checks before you choose the next step.
